Why get married?

In my philosophy of sex and love class we had a discussion about why people get married (specifically should homosexual marriage be legal, the consensus was yes) but of course, the conversation got off track.

As the only person engaged in the class (there were married people but the professor for one reason or another didn't want them to engage in this discussion...), she tended to pick on me to justify it.

I first answered why I wanted to get married based on two things: the first is what everyone expected: "I love him, I see a good future together, I want to have a life partner" yada yada yoo. My second reasoning was half expected, I answered because of politics, essentially. It's easier for tax purposes to be married. The main thing I argued was the fact that I found out once my fiance and I get married, that we will both get $2000 more each/year of educational loan funding from our province's program.

Marriage is encouraged. I am not saying get married because quite often people get married without knowing why. I am just saying that politically it makes sense because that is how we are trained to think.

But I know for a sure fact that a marriage license won't change our relationship too much. At one point I used to see it almost as an insurance policy, that we will not leave each other. It will be harder, since divorces are hard to go through rather than just splitting ways, but I still think that a marriage license is that last little thing there that makes you try a little harder to make it work. Notice how I said not to force it to work.

Anyways. Our professor asked the class "Who here is going to get married someday/ wants to?" Almost all of the men actually raised their hands, except 1.5 guys. Only about 1/3 of the female population of the class raised their hands.

What did I expect in a mostly gender studies major class?

Marriage is not death, but it is also not a really necessary thing to achieve in life. My fiance and I are basically married already, to a degree. We live together and share everything and love each other just as much as we would if we were married.

The second question my professor shot at me, specifically this time, was why I was going to change my last name (only about 3/40 students raised their hand saying they would change their last name). Since she knew I was engaged, she asked why. I again, argued something political. I also argued I am not connected to my dad's name. My last name right now is my dad's name. I don't feel like it's mine. Even though my mom has the same last name, I don't feel like it is mine. A lot of people probably do, but I don't. Honestly, if I could have my last name be anything, I would have my fiance and I both change our last names to something new, but I have no idea what and that is not necessarily an idea I see myself following through on. My fiance said he would hyphenate his name with mine, but I would much rather save us both the extra characteristics by just having once last name, his. It's traditional, but fuck, when am I ever traditional? Let me have this one thing!

I feel like everyone in the class thinks I am the stuffiest person ever for getting married so young, and the people who don't think I am think I am too young to be getting married.

But the thing with marriage is even though my fiance and I see each other being together for the rest of our lives, we recognized that people change and maybe someday we would fall apart. You never know what will happen. But what we do know for sure is that we want to be together and we want to try. My point is that if our relationship lasts 5 years, 2 minutes or 50 years, it will be an experience.

I hate when people see a marriage or any event as a waste of time. No, it was a memory and a learning experience. So your 15 year long marriage fell apart? But the first 12 years were amazing? Just because the last 3 sucked does not mean that the last 12 should be discredited.

That is a huge part of your life!

It's hard, I get it. If my fiance dumped me point blank right now, I would fucking hate him for it. I would be so mad, confused and upset. But I wouldn't think the last few years of our lives were useless.

Whatever.

What do you think of marriage?

I think if marriage was no longer a thing, politically, and all marriage certificates were just discredited and marriage became illegal, that that would be fine. A relationship is a relationship. Sue me for going through the motions and wanting that license.

Meninism

I had a philosophy prof yesterday who was talking about how there are intellectuals and academics who write articles that really are talking about little to nothing, and are really not that academic anyways. He specifically mentioned people in gender studies and historical/classical studies. He didn't mean to offend, he completely welcomed debate from any of these people. He was specifically talking about sentences with fluff in them.

He was talking about how we had over a 1 hour discussion JUST on the first sentence in the first book in Nicomachean ethics and how in these other disciplines students are expected to read several articles in preparation for class and then somehow they are able to cover all of these articles in one class. Taking it one of two ways, either these articles in these other disciplines are just fluffy bullcrap or that the system doesn't allow enough time to truly host discussions on these topics.

I am in a course that counts towards philosophy, gender and religion and sometimes we are told to read 3 articles and they really are not as sophisticated, there is the odd article that really grabs me because it actually informs me of something I couldn't assume. I feel like it's a mix of fluff and not having enough class time.

But anyways, my point is that this professor found that it is difficult to analyze just once sentence in these articles for an hour like we had with Aristotle.

So I was reading this article about "meninism" written by an arguably feminist author, because I was curious about the thoughts of what people thought about this meninist movement on twitter. It sort of started as a parody of feminism with legitimate non-critical issues men have in society (like not having doors held for them, being judged for being short, etc). Like most things, it angered the feminist community.

Here's the article I read

I've got to say I'm "rolling my eyes" over this article, which is funny  because for some reason whenever I picture a feminist I picture someone just fucking rolling their eyes and the number of times this author mentioned eye-rolling just supports my visualization.

So there was a specific quote that was terrible in this article and it is the entire reason I am writing a blog post about it.

This quote: "Men started tweeting at each other with a cute little Meninist hashtag. It started out as a joke (rolling my eyes so hard right now), and then morphed into an outlet where people with penises could bitch about how hard it is to be a man in the twenty-first century."

ISN'T 21ST CENTURY FOCUSED WESTERN FEMINISM THE EXACT SAME FUCKING THING?

I am sorry, but most feminism in the modern sense is when people with vaginas bitch about how hard it is to be a woman in the twenty-first century.

Again, as I always state, some places women are not equal and some acts of feminism are required to bring equality, but once we reach a society like the one we have today, most acts of feminism can fuck off. The same issues men are complaining about under the hashtag #meninism are the same or similar to the issues women are speaking of. If we are having a fucking crisis over this meninism and feminism stuff over girls saying that guys have a view on them that is to be skinny and pretty, and that men are complaining over the same thing, this society is not modern and not evolved. An evolved society will not be in this state any longer.

I actually find the meninism quotes and photos funny on twitter. Here's one:

This is an example of the meninism shenanigans (which again, are mostly jokes, so fuck off if you can't take a joke)

It's a parody of the whole "real women have curves" thing which is actually wandering off because of this:

Which is true.

What makes me angry about these types of things is just that the people giving opinions are not open minded or critical (sorry for the generalization). I read these tweets that are like "I hate women who support meninism, it's why I don't talk to people" and then I scroll to older tweets and it's just like "I want a heart shaped box of chocolates for valentines day <3". Um. Alrighty. So you think women like me who think meninism is funny are terrible people, but then you earlier stated you wanted special treatment from a man on valentines day. I am assuming she wasn't planning on romancing her crush or boyfriend on valentines day. Meninism. Right there.

Anyways, my point of this post was to draw attention to that disgusting sentence I pulled from the article I posted above. It actually upsets me to see people are just that unable to look at multiple sides of a situation and not see what they are actually writing. I don't think I took more than a half-hour of time writing this, so even I am falling victim to this. But I know that I thought hard about what I wanted to say.

I am going to make a statement and attempt not to use generalizations. Many women were recently angry about rape jokes (maybe a few years ago it was really hyped up in online media), which is understandable since rape is terrible. They argued that it encouraged it and whatnot, which I think is ridiculous. I don't go around telling rape jokes or anything but there have been some demeaning jokes towards women that I have laughed at because I am able to understand that it is funny and I know I am not going to be raped for laughing at a rape joke. Anyways. My point with this statement is that recently Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (who I love) are feminists and recently made a rape joke

So maybe this whole meninism thing in a few years will be joked about by feminists, just like rape jokes. Who knows.

What do you think about the hashtag #meninism?

I haven't been thinking lately - bread and circuses

Mad Men is an interesting TV show, work is fun, I think about my appearance more than often, school is starting back up, the internet is fucking rainbows and butterflies, going to the gym is important... wait when have I actually been thinking?

It is so hard to find time in a day to actually do critical thinking. I think that so much of my days used to be critical thinking, hence I began writing a blog. Lately I can't find the time. I think the entirety of society is just bread and circuses for logic and reasoning. I guess school is my critical thinking time (usually, depends on the professor) but I don't think critically about things I always want to think critically about. I don't have time to read things to make and opinion about them and to think about.

That is why I have been blogging less.

I keep calling everything bread and circuses lately. It is essentially a term meaning distracting the public from what are actually key issues. Basically if you entertain the public with useless things (like bread & circuses, cheap food and interesting things, ahem, chips & tv), they will distract themselves from important things so society will essentially progress. Fucking help us all if the things we watch are essentially socializing us to be people who we are not naturally.

Which it is.

I just feel like I have not been in touch with my usual life of lack of bread and circuses. I don't consume too much media compared to the average person. Rather than that, I think critically about what I am consuming. I like watching Mad Men as of late (don't talk to me about it, I am only on the 2nd season), and I go on facebook and twitter quite a bit, but I generally think critically about what I see. For example, there have been an immense amount of tweets about Lush's "bath bombs" and I can totally see this as a fucking advertisement through popularization and appeal. Fuck.

Anyways...

I am starting a new semester tomorrow. I have:
Philosophy of Sex & Love
Origins of Western Philosophy
Personality Psychology
Stats for Psych Part II
American Lit

4/5 of those I took last semester but are full year. The only new one is personality psych because I took psych of work part I last semester. Philosophy and Sex & Love still proves to be my favourite course. Last semester was focusing on love and this year is sex and I am loving the readings so far. So good.

Anyways. I'll try to blog more but only time will tell what happens.

I got my wedding dress & I am beginning to hate weddings

Firstly, I apologize because I typically do not post girly things like this. If you are a regular reader, this is a different type of post. Although you might want to stick around for the end of the post because I get into a ranty mood about the wedding industry. Enjoy!

I went dress shopping for the first time last Sunday and I was determined to get my wedding dress then and there because I didn't want to keep looking at other shops forever. My actual wedding isn't going to be for about a year and a half or so but I went dress shopping early. Why? This is why: http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2014/11/11/liquidator_hopes_for_a_bridal_wave_with_wedding_gown_clearance_sale.html

I don't live in Toronto, but I am about a 4 hour drive away. $52 of gas was totally worth getting my wedding dress for $199+tax. I won't be posting a photo of it because I do not want most guests and my fiance to see what it looks like. Well, actually, I do. I really do want my fiance to know what it looks like, but apparently you're not supposed to. Which is dumb.

I tried on approximately 18 wedding dresses. I had a specific dress in mind, lace sleeves, tight and long, no train, maybe backless, maybe a corset dress. Well, I didn't find that. But I did find one that I like. It had a train. I HATE dresses with trains. I don't know if I am going to get it altered to not have a train yet. It isn't super poofy but it does stick out, I might get a layer of the poofiness removed as well and just hope that the main layer of fabric sits the same.

Anyways, how did I select that dress from all of the others? Whenever I tried on a dress I would walk out and look into a mirror. Frequently I would look at the dress in the mirror and think "that's a really nice dress" but then I would look up at my face and my entire body and hate it. Weird, huh? The way that my face looked in the dress determined the dress that I got. Many dresses looked good on my body and many of them were beautiful but until I looked at my self as a whole in the dress and I liked what I saw, I didn't choose a dress.

Although I do regret getting the dress that I got. It is kind of a vintage-modern type of dress and it is very gorgeous and too extravagant. I regret getting it because it is too extravagant. I am most likely going to be planning a small wedding and it not be very low key. I was very inclined to buy a second dress I tried on which was lace t-shirt style on top with a belt at the waist and then dropped down with no train and was chiffon. It was only $199 and I should've done that. But I didn't.

My wedding is not going to match my dress. The dress I got looks way better on me than the low-key dress, so I will rock it. But I do regret this.

But I honestly don't care anymore. I'm starting to get fed-up with planning a wedding. It is annoying. I don't want anyone else to plan it because I don't want to be unhappy with it. But things are already starting to happen that I don't want to happen. My mom insisted on buying me a veil (she also paid for my dress) and I do not want a veil. Yes, I agree the veil looks nice with the dress and pulls it all together but I also hate the idea of a veil.

I really am starting to hate the whole industry. I want to sell my engagement ring (even though it wasn't very expensive) and buy a slim band for my engagement and a slightly thicker one for the wedding.

I want to sell the dress and get a more low-key dress.

But I won't be doing these things because of all of the pressure I am feeling from everyone around me. Heck, even the groom doesn't want to elope!

But he is right. I might regret not having a nice wedding. But at the moment it's too much. I could delay the wedding to be years and years from now but I want to be married soon and it is kind of backwards to get a marriage certificate with no wedding and then having a wedding years later.

It's all dumb.

But anyways. My dress is cute so whatever, right?

10 Christmas songs... for the ATHEIST!

As an avid christmas lover and an atheist, I decided to compile a list of christmas songs that I enjoy that do not contain anything religious in them. It just sucks that "Christ" is in "Christmas". Oh well.

HAPPY SATURNALIA EVERYONE!

Here are 10 Christmas Songs for the Atheist:

Michael Buble- White Christmas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btf3506ERbY
Children listen to hear sleighbells in the snow in this song... not stories told from the bible.

Bing Crosby- It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcZAwoip5aY
A good ole' song about consumerism. Nothing religious here.

Mariah Carey - All I want for Christmas is you
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXQViqx6GMY
"I don't want a lot for christmas, there is just one thing I need" lack of religious falsities, for me.

Dean Martin - Let it Snow
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN7LW0Y00kE
Let it snow on the churches so hard that they can't get in. Harsh? Maybe.

Britney Spears - My Only Wish
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrvebqA8xdM
Although, if you replace the name "Santa" with "God" this just sounds like she is being whiny and bratty about wanting someone to love. But with Santa, it just sounds perfectly justified!

Celine Dion - So this is Christmas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51bO1CVPWRA
Let's hope it's a good one, without any Jesus references.

Train- Shake up Christmas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-8VCL4uSUc
I never heard this song until today. It's solid.

Ariana Grande - Last Christmas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYSWgsUQt1U
Give your heart to someone special, not god. Because there isn't one. Get it? It's a joke! There's no god! Hilarious, right?

Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeyHl1tQeaQ
This is how christmas should be.

Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmas Time
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6o8-eLZhrOA
One of my favourites.

What are your favourite atheistmas songs?

Things that I want to do

I just turned 19 and for those who do not know, that is the legal drinking age in Ontario, Canada, where I live. So my life is basically awesome now and that is all that matters. I was going to write a long post about drinking but I wasn't feeling like it. I don't know how to describe alcohol yet, even though I've been drinking since I was 17. Let's just leave it at being "amazing and terrifying".

I decided to leave a list of "things I want to do" here. They aren't goals, they are just things that I want to do, whether they are realistic or not. I'm not going to put too much thought into it, I am just going to write without stopping.

- I want to take my mom on a cruise once I can afford it, most likely an Alaskan cruise
- I want to visit Europe every other year, at least once I have money
- I want to run a marathon in every province in Canada, and at least one in Florida, New York & Maybe even boston someday (P.S. I just completed my first marathon on October 19th, so go me!) Also in places in europe. Pretty much anywhere I can go.
- I want to be famous for something, whether it be an idea in the philosophy community, a book I wrote, a funny video I post... anything. Just for 5 minutes. Ideally I'd like to have a youtube video blow up and earn 1.5 million off of it.
- Lose about 10-15 pounds. I weight 135 right now, which is the most I've ever weighed. I ran my marathon at the lowest point of physical fitness I've had in a while, it's just I had the endurance to do it.
- Have a nice big house
- Have a daschund, basset hound, great dane, another lab, etc. Love dogs.
- Have a really short hairstyle once
- Go white-blonde before my hair goes grey... or once it goes grey just die it white blonde
- Meet a celebrity, Tina Fey or Stana Katic, preferably.
- Do something amazing for my future husband, Nick. I don't know what, but something that just causes him to fall backwards.
- Have a shitty enough wedding that it's cheap, but good enough so that people think that we spent too much on it for being students.
- Change the lives of my students
- Throw a lot of my salary as a teacher back into my students' education
- Have a closet full of corsets because I can
- Live on an island with nick for a year (with electricity) and what not but not be bugged by anything for a year. Pay to have food delivered once every few weeks, have nothing go wrong ever. No stresses. Essentially pay buttloads of money upfront to be catered to for a year, pay things like electricty, internet and whatnot in advance so we don't get bugged. Everything will just be perfect and there will be no stress
- Get my uterus removed, if not my tubes tied. By the time I'm married at 20 because I fucking hate the pill.
- Run a half marathon faster than 1:40, if I can do this, run it in under 1:30. Run a marathon in under 4:00 and if I do this, qualify for Boston.

I guess that's it for now. My brain ran out. I just typed that until I was done.

Life is pretty okay right now compared to usual. I know exams are coming up soon so my hair will start falling out more. Actually, that doesn't happen to me, which is good. But still, my philosophy in school (HAHA that's funny since I am a philosophy major) is essentially to learn how to succeed and not learn the material. I know what I need to focus on for how long and how to take a test and how to write an assignment and go to all of my classes. When it comes to my free time, I spend maybe 3-5 hours a week on school on average (other than class). When I have a test, I probably spend about 10+. Professors recommend you spend 3 hours additional to each class you take. Yeah. No. Maybe once third year comes and definitely in 4th year. School is so easily bullshitted it  is hilarious.

Anyways.

That's it for now.

My Sexuality

The past few days I have been tweeting quite a bit about being attracted to certain female celebrities. Specifically, Stana Katic, who is very sexy. I am very attracted to her.

I've never really publicly declared my sexuality before. I've been telling people I am straight/heterosexual my whole life, and that is why I still tell people. Although there probably should be an asterisk on it.

I am sexually, emotionally and physically attracted to men more than I am sexually, emotionally and physically attracted to females. But I still have the ability to be sexually, emotionally and physically attracted to females. Physical attraction between men and females is pretty equal, for the most part, in my opinion.

Why am I even thinking about this? My (male) finacé and I were talking about whether or not we would stay with each other if one of us switched genders. He said no, I said yes. If for some reason he wanted to become a girl (he would make a hideous girl for the record) I would stay with him. My love and relationship status doesn't change because his sexual organs do. Although he argued that he wouldn't stay with me (most likely, at least). He said he would probably try but he would find it hard, even if we didn't have sex. He said we would probably just be really good friends. I was kind of offended by this, but I also get it, I guess.

I told myself all through high school that I wouldn't say no to a girl if she asked me out. I feel like I could be equally capable to love a woman as much as I could love a man. I think it's weird that others wouldn't or couldn't be able to. I think it doesn't matter what sexual organs 2 people have.

But even though I argue that it's weird some people are just exclusive to a certain sex, I still have a preference to men. I think it's because I like the dynamic better. I guess. I'm not sure.

But I am definitely attracted to women. Anybody that has heard me talk about Tina Fey certainly knows. But Stana Katic is definitely my dream female celebrity right about now. It's not just celebrities I am talking about. It's just easy to point out attractive female celebrities.

But I guess it doesn't matter anyways that I might be bi-sexual or polysexual or whatever. I don't care to figure it out or to define myself. I am with a man and I am physically, emotionally and sexually attracted to him and that's all that really matters right now.

(Stana if you are reading this I will leave my finacé for you)*
